Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) Canada 2025 — Overcome Inadmissibility Temporarily

What is a TRP?

A Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) is a document that allows someone who is inadmissible to Canada to enter or remain in Canada for a limited period when there are compelling reasons. It does not cure inadmissibility; it only grants temporary access. TRPs can address criminal, medical, or other grounds of inadmissibility.

When TRP Is Appropriate vs Criminal Rehabilitation

Use a TRP when you need to enter or stay in Canada temporarily and are not yet eligible for Criminal Rehabilitation, or when you only need a one-time or short-term visit. Use Criminal Rehabilitation when you want a permanent solution and have passed the required waiting period. You can apply for a TRP while your rehabilitation application is in process. Grounds Covered

TRPs can be used for criminal inadmissibility, medical inadmissibility (where permitted by policy), financial reasons in some cases, and other grounds. The officer must be satisfied that your need to enter or stay in Canada outweighs the risk to Canada.

Single-Entry vs Multiple-Entry TRP

A single-entry TRP allows one entry into Canada. A multiple-entry TRP allows you to leave and re-enter during its validity. The length and number of entries depend on your reason for travel and the officer's decision.

TRP Validity and Renewal

TRPs are issued for a set period. When they expire, you must leave Canada or apply for a new TRP if you have a continuing compelling reason. There is no automatic renewal; each application is assessed on its own.

Application Process (POE vs IRCC)

You can apply for a TRP at a port of entry (POE) when you arrive, or in advance through IRCC (visa office or online). Applying in advance can reduce uncertainty at the border. Urgent or one-time travel may be handled at the POE. VMC helps you choose the best approach and prepare the application.

Compelling Reasons — What IRCC Considers

Officers consider the reason for your visit (e.g. family event, business, medical treatment), the seriousness of your inadmissibility, the time since the offence or incident, and your ties to Canada and your home country. A strong submission explains why your need to be in Canada outweighs the risk.

Cost and Processing Time

The TRP processing fee is $229 CAD. Processing times vary by office. Check IRCC for current times. Urgent requests may be considered in some cases.

TRP to PR Pathway

In rare cases, after a period of time in Canada on TRPs (e.g. 3 years under certain public policies), an applicant may become eligible to apply for permanent residence. This is not the norm. VMC can advise whether any such pathway applies to you.
