OPEN WORK PERMITS

Work for Any Employer - No LMIA, No Job Offer Required

Open work permits let you work for almost any employer in Canada. Eligibility depends on your situation - graduation, spousal status, youth mobility, or PR application.

LMIA WORK PERMITS

Employer-Supported Work Permits

Your employer obtains a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) confirming no Canadian was available for the role. You then apply for an employer-specific work permit.

What is an LMIA? A positive LMIA from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) is your employer's proof that the job offer is genuine and the Canadian labour market was tested. We guide employers through the full LMIA process - see our Employer Services page. Employer LMIA Services →

Your employer has an LMIA - what's next?

Once your employer has a positive LMIA, We prepare the complete worker-side work permit application - reducing delays and refusals.

LMIA-EXEMPT WORK PERMITS

Work Without an LMIA

Many employer-specific work permits don't need an LMIA if a trade agreement or International Mobility Program exemption applies. Faster and lower cost for both employer and worker.

Work Permit Refused or About to Expire?

We handle extensions, employer changes, Bridging OWP applications, and refusal reviews - don't let a gap in authorization put your status at risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Canadian work permits - updated for 2026

  • A Canadian work permit is an official document issued by IRCC that allows a foreign national to work legally in Canada for a specific employer, occupation, or in an open capacity. Most foreign nationals need a work permit to work in Canada - but there are exceptions. You do not need a work permit if your work falls under a statutory exemption, such as certain business visitors, athletes competing in Canada, or performing artists on short engagements. Citizens of the United States working under CUSMA (formerly NAFTA) in specific professional categories can sometimes enter without a formal permit. We can confirm whether you need a work permit for your specific situation and identify the fastest pathway to get one.
  • An employer-specific (closed) work permit ties you to one specific employer, job location, and in some cases one job title. You cannot change employers, take a second job, or work in a different city without a new permit. An open work permit has no employer restrictions - you can work for any eligible employer anywhere in Canada, change jobs freely, and take on multiple employers simultaneously. Open permits include: Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP), spousal open work permits, International Experience Canada (IEC) permits, Bridging Open Work Permits (BOWP), and some humanitarian permits. Open permits are significantly more valuable but have stricter eligibility requirements. We identify whether you qualify for an open permit before recommending any pathway.
  • Government fees for a work permit application are CAD $155 per person. If you are applying for an open work permit, an additional Open Work Permit Holder Fee of $100 applies. Biometrics cost $85 per person and are required for most applicants from outside Canada on a first application or after a 10-year gap. If your employer is applying for an LMIA to support your work permit, the LMIA application fee is $1,000 per position - paid by the employer, not the worker. Professional consultant fees vary by case complexity. We provide a full transparent fee breakdown before you commit to anything - no hidden costs.
  • Processing times vary significantly by permit type and application method. Global Talent Stream (tech and innovation roles): as fast as 2 weeks. IEC (International Experience Canada): 2 to 8 weeks. PGWP: 2 to 5 months. Spousal open work permit: 4 to 16 weeks. LMIA-based employer-specific permits: 2 to 8 weeks inside Canada after LMIA approval; the LMIA itself takes 30 to 60 days on average. In 2026, IRCC has been improving processing times through online portal automation, targeting 10 to 28 days for online submissions in many categories. We monitor live processing times and advises clients on the fastest available pathway for their specific situation.
  • It depends on your situation. If you applied to extend your existing work permit before it expired, you are on implied status and may continue working for the same employer under the same conditions while IRCC processes your extension. As of 2025, implied status has been extended to 180 days - up from the previous 120 days - giving workers more protection during processing delays. If you are a new applicant entering Canada from outside, you generally cannot begin working until your permit is approved and in hand. There are narrow exceptions for certain LMIA-exempt categories. We advises on exactly when you can and cannot work to avoid inadvertent status violations.
  • In many cases, yes. If you currently hold a valid temporary resident status in Canada (as a visitor, student, or worker), you may be able to apply to change your status or extend your permit from within Canada without leaving. Some employer-specific and open work permit categories are available through in-Canada applications. However, some permit types require you to apply from outside Canada or at a port of entry. Visitors in Canada generally cannot apply for a work permit from inside unless they fall under specific exemptions or public policies. We assess your current status and advises on whether an in-Canada application is possible - avoiding unnecessary travel and delays.
