PR Card Renewal Canada 2025 — Don't Let Your PR Card Expire

What is a PR Card and Why It Matters

The Permanent Resident (PR) Card is proof of your status as a permanent resident of Canada. You need it to re-enter Canada on a commercial carrier (e.g. plane). It is valid for 5 years (for most adults) or 1 year (for children under 14 in some cases). Keeping it valid and meeting the residency obligation protects your status.

PR Card Validity

Most PR cards are valid for 5 years for adults. Cards for children under 14 may be valid for 1 year. The expiry date is on the card. Plan to renew before expiry if you need to travel.

Residency Obligation: 730 Days in 5 Years

You must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) in every rolling 5-year period. Some time abroad may count (e.g. with a Canadian citizen spouse, or working for a Canadian business). If you do not meet this, you may lose your PR status when you apply for a new card or when you try to enter Canada.

How to Calculate Residency

Count every day you were physically in Canada in the 5 years before the day you sign your application (or the day you enter Canada, for border officers). Use IRCC's online calculator or a detailed travel history. Keep records of your entries and exits.

Renewal Process

  1. Confirm you meet the residency obligation.
  2. Complete the PR card renewal application and gather documents (current card, ID, photos, fee).
  3. Submit online or by mail as per IRCC instructions.
  4. Wait for processing; you may be asked to pick up the card in person.

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged PR Card

Apply for a replacement card using the same form as renewal. If your card was lost or stolen, you may report it. You will need to provide identification and pay the fee. Processing times apply.

PR Travel Document (PRTD)

If you are outside Canada and your PR card has expired or you do not have it, you need a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to board a flight (or other commercial carrier) to Canada. You apply at a visa office abroad. You must still meet the residency obligation to be issued a PRTD.

Processing Time 2025

Check IRCC's website for current PR card and PRTD processing times. Apply early if you have travel plans.

Failed Residency Obligation

If you have not met the 730-day requirement, your renewal or PRTD application may be refused and you could lose your PR status. There are limited options (e.g. humanitarian and compassionate considerations). VMC can review your case and advise on the best approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Processing times vary. Check IRCC's current processing times for PR card applications. Delays can occur; apply well before your card expires if you need to travel.
You must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) in every 5-year period. Time spent abroad with a Canadian citizen spouse or certain other exceptions may count. Failing to meet this can result in loss of PR status.
If you do not meet the 730-day rule, you may lose your PR status when you try to re-enter Canada or when you apply for a new PR card. You may have options such as humanitarian and compassionate considerations. VMC can assess your situation and advise.
A Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) is for PRs who are outside Canada without a valid PR card and need to return to Canada by plane. You apply at a visa office abroad. If you are in Canada, you renew or replace your PR card instead.
If you are in Canada, you need a valid PR card to re-enter Canada on a commercial carrier (plane, bus, train from the US). If you are abroad without a valid PR card, you need a PRTD to board a flight to Canada. PRs entering from the US by private vehicle may use other proof of status.
If you are in Canada, apply to renew your PR card as soon as possible. You can stay in Canada with an expired card, but you cannot use it to return to Canada if you leave. If you are abroad with an expired card, apply for a PRTD to return. If you have lost your PR status, different rules apply; contact VMC.
